About: Les Joynes (US) is an artist based in New York. Founder of FormLAB - a site-specific geographically-dispersed art series he will be coming to India in September 2021 as Fulbright scholar to create experimental performances and documentary. His contributions have featured in Art in America, Art Monthly, Flash Art, Commons and Sense, NHK Japan, Journal for Artistic Research and recent books Artist Centric Practice, New Institutional Models: China’s Cultural Landscape by Mid-Century (2019) Long Museum, Shanghai; Going Beyond: Art as Adventure (2018), Cambridge Scholars; Art and Research at the Outermost Limits of Site Specificity, Newcastle, Australia and the Journal for Visual Culture, University of California. He is represented by Gallery Thomas Jäckel in New York.

As both a contemporary artist and curator he has exhibited in museums and galleries in the UK France, Japan, Germany, China, Mongolia, Korea and Australia. He was member of the curatorial team for the Taipei Biennial “Sites of Desire” exhibition in 1998. He is recipient of the 2021-2022 Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Award for India.

China

As resident Artist at the Beijing Inside-Out Art Museum I created an inside-out laboratory including performances in Beijing markets, back streets and improvising a new form of Basketball on the Great Wall of China. Recipient of the Fulbright US Public Diplomacy Award.

Mongolia

As CEC ArtsLink grantee led overland expedition to Mongolian Border with Siberia to research Shamanic rituals and created multi-media installation at Zanabazar Museum of Fine Art, Ulaanbaatar. Recipient of the Fulbright US Public Diplomacy Award.

Brazil

Sponsored by the Brazilian Museum of Sculpture and local sponsors turned a wing of the museum into a laboratory. Over four weeks created live artmaking sessions open to the public. Constructed multi-media assemblage sculptures, Laboratory habitats inside and outside the museu, video performances and worked with local Candomble group to perform rituals at hte museum.

Concept

FormLAB is the studio turned inside-out. it is a space for me to learn about local visual cultures. In each residency I create a space where I and others can observe the processes of art-making and build cross-cultural dialogue.

France

Working with an international crew from the US, UK, France, Taiwan, Mexico and Germany FormLAB created a multimedia solo exhibition at Treignac Projets, a residency and museum space in Central France creating an art-making assembly-line (2010).

Korea

Awarded the Seoul Foundation for Art Grant was part of four month residency in Seoul (2012) to create artworks with local Korean artists. Collaborated with recycling company to “up-cycle” toys.

Russia

Awarded a 30 day grant and CEC ArtsLink Russia residency in Saint Petersburg (2017) I created a series of local interventions that explored the sites of former Soviet Monuments. Conducted researching fieldwork in and around St. Petersburg on the relationships of monuments to site and memory.
